KNOTT

The client had purchased their dream home, a historic property with ample outdoor space, in Portland’s Irvington neighborhood. They envisioned outdoor living, recreation and relaxation areas, complete with fruit trees, a kitchen garden and a custom sport field. They also were after an era-sensitive design. Their Colonial Revival style home was designed by Ellis Lawrence in 1914, constructed in 1915-16, and now is part of the National Registration of Historic Places.

Project Date: 2021-22
Location: Irvington, Portland, Oregon

Before. The house felt cut off from the grounds and the back yard lacked purpose.

New construction of detailed custom wood carpentry and historically replicated perimeter retaining walls with a double layered living fence line of hedged beech.

Paths were rebuilt, in keeping with the historic style of the property, to create safer, more stable access throughout the site. Plantings were simplified with attention to symmetry to create a cohesive garden experience.

The stately home is now clearly connected to the grounds, coralburst crabapples promise beauty in the new bosque garden, and the custom sport field begs for long sunny days of games and laughter.
